Establishment of the Apple Valley Golf Course
This was also known as the Apple Valley Country Club and was founded by Newton “Newt” T. Bass and Bernard J. “Bud” Westlund in the mid-1940s. They both were oil field wildcatters, excavators who drilled wildcat wells not near any known oilfield in order to discover new sites where oil could be dug up from the ground. They are particularly known for laying the foundations of successful real estate development projects including Apple Valley golf course 18-holes golf club in the Apple Valley town of California.
Design of the Golf Course
William F. Bell, who was also known as Billy Bell Jr. designed the Apple Valley Country Club. Bell was a mid-1900s well-reputed golf course architect. His designs include more than 50 golf course projects. Some of the most renowned are California Country Club, Country Club at Ranch Bernardo & Rancho Bernardo Inn, La Cumbre Country Club, Mesa Verde Country Club, Newport Beach Country Club, Red Hill Country Club and Saticoy Country Club. This country club was open to the public in 1948 and consists of an 18-holes, driving range, tennis court and full food and beverage facilities. Some of the other amenities available for members are:
- 2 tennis courts with daily timings from dawn till 9pm and entry is on first-come-first-serve basis
- A bar and grill/lounge, pro-shop, meeting room and dining room
- A banquet for formal events such as holding marriage ceremonies
- A glass-enclosed patio which gives a picturesque golf course view to the diners
Apple Valley Golf Course’s popularity amongst celebrities

Many stars including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, George Bear, Mike Souchak, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, Jimmy Demeritt, and Lloyd Mangrum have toured the fields and well-maintained grounds of the Apple Valley Country Club. Similarly, Apple Valley CC served as a temporary resort and stay inn for other distinguished individuals. Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sainatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, alongwith Fred McMurry, Barbara Stanwyck, Olympian Bob Mathias, Jeff Chandler, June Allison, and Alan Ladd would play golf and rest up before continuing towards their destination in Las Vegas.
Historical Significance of Apple Valley
Mr Lloyd Mangrum was the head professional golf player at the Apple Valley CC for many years. He was known as ‘Mr. Icicle’ due to the smooth swing of his golf stick and his ever so calm attitude in the field. He became a professional player by age 15. And he won 36 times on the PGA tour and bagged a total of 46 wins worldwide. He did not accept the offer proposed to him for a respectable job at Ford Meade and instead decided to serve in World War II. After he was wounded in the Battle of Bulge, he was awarded TWO purple hearts for his laudable services at the war.
He won the 1949 US Open and in 1950 was part of a famous playoff with Ben Hogan at Merion. In 1973 within the bounds of the Apple Golf CC, Lloyd, unfortunately, passed away from his twelfth heart attack. Here he had found a community and home for the past 20 years. The clubs he won in the 1949 LA Open are on display in the lounge. Lloyd secured an entry in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, receiving 77% votes on his very first ballot.
Roy Rogers :

Roy Rogers, the famous American singer, actor and television anchor who was also the co-founder of the Sons of the Pioneers lives and played golf at the Apple Valley CC along with his wife Dale Evans. They moved here in 1965 and Roy lived here till his death in 1998 with Dale following him in 2001.
Furthermore, Richard Nixon, the 37th US President and a member of the Republican Party came to live on the back 9 of Apple Valley’s course after he lost the Presidential elections to John F. Kennedy in 1960. During this period he also wrote ”The 6 Crisis”, a book about his time as Dwight Eisenhower’s Vice President.
