Some Noteworthy 2021 USA Master Games Players
Joe Williamson: Cornhole Player
As a child, Williamson endured a lot of health-related issues. He was born with congenital heart disease and had to go through 3 open-heart and 2 liver surgeries amongst many others. However, through determination and practice, he mastered Cornhole. He knew patience was the key and that slow progress still meant greater winning outcomes. Participating in the 2021 USA Master Games holds great importance for Williamson for it is being held at the Perrin Brewing which is where he competed in his first competitive cornhole tournament back in 2017. By sharing his personal narrative, the cornhole players hope people with similar physical disabilities or chronic illnesses don’t grow pessimistic. Instead, they should exert their time and energy in finding what’s meant for them even if it is some non-traditional sport or hobby.
Burt Saidel: Track Runner
Saidel belonged to the 1930s era where no organized sport teams existed and children only played in their backyards with a handful of friends, making the best of the space and equipment they had. In high school, however, Saidel got the chance to be a part of the football and track team. Speed was his winning tactic and he served successfully in competing dashes for track and was a running back in football. Even at age 90, Saidel’s love for sports and physical fitness hasn’t faded a bit. Although he loves to be competitive, the foremost thing which draws him in is the community aspect of sports. Making new friends and learning from them. This year, once again Saidel has unleashed his young athletic track runner spirit and is setting an example for people worldwide about how one’s passion has no boundaries, not even time.
